Deepwater Vee
$6.79
A stunning poetic debut that explores some of Canada’s most threatened waterways — places both altered and untamed — and tracks their currents of history and myth. Melanie Siebert’s first collection travels many remote northern rivers, but also through two of Canada’s most damaged waterways — the Athabasca, which runs through the heart of the Alberta tar sands, and the North Saskatchewan, the river Siebert grew up alongside, one stressed by dams and upgraders, sewage and pesticides. These rivers push the poems into a contemplation of loss and into the terrain of Alexander MacKenzie’s dreams, a busker’s broken-down street riffs, and the dream-world wanderings of a grandmother who returns to inhabit the earth. Here boundaries blur — between the self and the other, between the living and the dead, between the human and the wild — and loss carries with it both music and silence.

Ships from the Depths: Deepwater Archaeology
$32.82
Deepwater archaeology uncovers secrets from the ancient maritime past . . . Thousands of shipwrecks and archaeological sites lie undiscovered in deep water, potentially holding important clues to our maritime past. Scientists have explored only a small percentage of the oceans’ depths, as 98 percent of the seabed lies well beyond the reach of conventional diving. "Ships from the Depths"" "surveys the dramatic advances in technology over the last few years that have made it possible for scientists to locate, study, and catalogue archaeological sites in waters previously inaccessible to humans. Researcher and explorer Fredrik Soreide presents the development of deepwater archaeology since 1971, when Willard Bascom designed his "Alcoa Seaprobe" to locate and raise deepwater wrecks in the Mediterranean. Accompanied by descriptions and color photographs of deepwater projects and equipment, this book considers not only techniques that have been developed for location and observation of sites but also removal and excavation methods distinctive to these unique locations, far beyond the reach of scuba gear. Soreide provides an introduction to and survey of the history, development, and potential of this exciting branch of nautical archaeology. Scholars and field archaeologists will appreciate this handy compendium of the current state of the discipline and technology, and general readers will relish this comprehensive look at the challenges and opportunities associated with locating and studying historical and ancient shipwrecks in some of the world’s deepest waters.

Oil and Gas Technologies for the Arctic and Deepwater
$43.55
Nearly 2 billion acres of offshore public domain is owned by the United States adjacent to Alaska and the lower 48 States. Much of the Nation’s future domestic petroleum supply is expected to come from this area. Areas of highest potential apparently occur in deep water and in the Arctic where operating conditions are severe, development costs high, and financial risks immense. As the pace of exploration increases in these "frontier" regions, questions arise about the technologies needed to safely and efficiently explore and develop oil and gas in harsh environments. The Office of Technology Assessment undertook this assessment at the join request of the House Committees on Interior and Insular Affairs and on Merchant Marine and Fisheries. The study explores the range of technologies required for exploration and development of offshore energy resources and assesses associated economic factors and financial risks. It also evaluates the environmental factors related to energy activities in frontier regions and considers important government regulatory and service programs.

Loop: The First and Only Offshore Deepwater Oil Port Built in the United States
$47.12
This story of LOOP INC. is my opportunity to reveal the background of planning, permitting, and construction of the first and only offshore crude oil unloading deepwater port in the United States. As the first President of LOOP INC., Mr. Read was personally involved as the responsible spokesman for all phases of many interesting activities. From preliminary design engineering to passing legislation in the United States Congress and the State of Louisiana and through construction into operations was a real challenge. The port has been unloading crude oil tankers successfully for nearly twenty five years without a major mishap. It was front page news while trying to get permission to build and operate the port but, since start up, have been proceeding quietly with business as usual and is now looking forward to additional opportunities.

Disaster on the Horizon: High Stakes, High Risks, and the Story Behind the Deepwater Well Blowout
$3.94
"Disaster on the Horizon" is a behind-the-scenes investigative look at the worst oil well accident in US history, which led to the current environmental and economic catastrophe on the Gulf Coast. Cavnar uses his 30 years in the business to take readers inside the disaster, exposing the decisions leading up to the blowout and the immediate aftermath. It includes personal accounts of the survivors, assembled from testimony during various investigations, as well as personal interviews with survivors, witnesses, and family. It also provides a layman’s look at the industry, its technology, people, and risks. It deconstructs events and decisions made by BP, Transocean, and the US Government before and after the disaster, and the effects of those decisions, both good and bad.Cavnar explains what happened in the Gulf, explores how we arrived at deep water drilling in the first place and then charts a course for how to avoid these disasters in the future.

EXXON Valdez to Deepwater Horizon: Protecting Victims of Major Oil Spills: Hearing Before the Committee on the Judiciary, United S
$27.59
Original publisher: Washington: U.S. G.P.O., 2011. LC Number: KF26 .J8 2010r OCLC Number: (OCoLC)712141551 Subject: Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, Alaska, 1989. Excerpt: … 11 been incorporated in the gulf today with the exception of near-real-time imagery for command and control from modern UAVs and the moratorium on oil production, which has been very deleterious to our National security. Thank you. The prepared statement of General McInerney appears as a sub-mission for the record. ] LOBUCHAR Senator K. Thank you very much, and thank you to all three of you. I know Senator Begich is on his way, but I am going to get started with a few questions, and when he comes, we will have him speak and officially introduce you, Mr. Banta. I wanted to talk just a minute about the Exxon Valdez litigation, Mr. O’Neill, and I know that the jury awarded the plaintiffs $ 287 million as well as $ 5 billion in punitives. That was in 1994. Four-teen years of appellate litigation followed. It was then reduced to $ 500 million. It is just hard for me to believe these 8,000 – is this true that 8,000 fishermen actually died before they were able to even get their award? Mr. O’N. The statement is correct. Most of the fishermen at EILL the time could have been anywhere from 18 years old to 70 years old, so just actuarially you lose an awful lot of people over 21 years. So these people did not get to see their justice, and their families sit there now knowing that they did not get to see their justice. And it hurts institutions – in this case, the court system – to have a process like that that goes on for 21 years. It is a nightmare for Cordovans. It is a nightmare for all the people in Alaska. LOBUCHAR Senator K. So I take it you are glad that we were able to get at least $ 20 billion in the fund up front BP. Mr. O’N. I think the $ 20 billion that BP has agreed to ad-EILL minister is a huge, huge step forward. I have a couple of concerns about it, but that is real money, and it is a lo…

Deep Water: The Gulf Oil Disaster and the Future of Offshore Drilling
$52.52
On April 20, 2010, the Macondo well blew out, costing the lives of 11 men, and beginning a catastrophe that sank the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and spilled nearly 5 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The spill disrupted an entire region’s economy, damaged fisheries and critical habitats, and brought vividly to light the risks of deepwater drilling for oil and gas the latest frontier in the national energy supply. Soon after, President Barack Obama appointed a seven-member Commission to investigate the disaster, analyze its causes and effects, and recommend the actions necessary to minimize such risks in the future. The Commission’s report offers the American public and policymakers alike the fullest account available of what happened in the Gulf and why, and proposes actions changes in company behavior, reform of government oversight, and investments in research and technology required as industry moves forward to meet the nation’s energy needs.

Ships from the Depths (Hardcover)
$66.83
Deepwater archaeology uncovers secrets from the ancient maritime past . . . Thousands of shipwrecks and archaeological sites lie undiscovered in deep water, potentially holding important clues to our maritime past. Scientists have explored only a small percentage of the oceans` depths, as 98 percent of the seabed lies well beyond the reach of conventional diving.  Ships from the Depths surveys the dramatic advances in technology over the last few years that have made it possible for scientists to locate, study, and catalogue archaeological sites in waters previously inaccessible to humans. Researcher and explorer Fredrik S reide presents the development of deepwater archaeology since 1971, when Willard Bascom designed his Alcoa Seaprobe to locate and raise deepwater wrecks in the Mediterranean. Accompanied by descriptions and color photographs of deepwater projects and equipment, this book considers not only techniques that have been developed for location and observation of sites but also removal and excavation methods distinctive to these unique locations, far beyond the reach of scuba gear.  S reide provides an introduction to and survey of the history, development, and potential of this exciting branch of nautical archaeology. Scholars and field archaeologists will appreciate this handy compendium of the current state of the discipline and technology, and general readers will relish this comprehensive look at the challenges and opportunities associated with locating and studying historical and ancient shipwrecks in some of the world’s deepest waters.

A Day’s Work: A Sampler of Historic Maine Photographs, 1860-1920, Part II
$32.31
These extraordinary collections of photographs and narrative captions have wide appeal for anyone interested in Maine’s past. Bunting has a knack for spotting the unusual in a photograph, or some minor detail that, in fact, tells a major story about the how and why. From granite quarry operations to an itinerant cobbler in a sailing scow to hootchie-kootchie dancers at the state fair to deepwater ships, his page-long captions place these images in social and economic context–but this is not dry history. His research has uncovered a wealth of fascinating, often quirky detail (did you know that mummy wrappings were imported from Egypt for Maine papermaking?), and he makes frequent forays into the Maine storytelling tradition.

Fire on the Horizon: The Untold Story of the Gulf Oil Disaster
$3.99
In the spring of 2010 the world watched for weeks as more than 200 million gallons of crude oil billowed from a hole three miles deep in the Gulf of Mexico. Warnings of various and imminent environmental consequences dominated the news. Deepwater drilling – largely ignored or misunderstood to that point – exploded in the American consciousness in the worst way possible. Fire on the Horizon, written by veteran oil rig captain John Konrad and longtime Washington Post journalist Tom Shroder, recounts in vivid detail the life of the rig itself, from its construction in South Korea in the year 2000 to its improbable journey around the world to its disastrous end, and reveals the day-to-day lives, struggles, and ambitions of those who called it home.

In Deep Water: The Anatomy of a Disaster, the Fate of the Gulf, and Ending Our Oil Addiction
$2.99
When Deepwater Horizon’s well blew out on April 20, 2010, the resulting explosion claimed eleven lives. Over the next two months, an estimated 200 million gallons of crude oil spewed into the Gulf of Mexico, a haven of biodiversity and one of the world’s prime fishing grounds. The resultant oil slick covered 2,500 square miles, killing wildlife and menacing the coastline – and many thousands of jobs – from Texas to the Florida Keys, and beyond. How and why did this happen? Who was responsible? And what can be done to make sure such a devastating accident never happens again? In Deep Water answers these questions and more. Drawing on the work of the 400 scientists, activists, and researchers at the Natural Resources Defense Council, In Deep Water documents the environmental and human toll of this tragedy – and underscores that our often wasteful over-reliance on oil comes at an ever-greater cost to us and to the planet we inhabit.

The Seabees at Gulfport
$17.67
In June 1942, the U.S. Navy established an advance base depot in Gulfport because of its uncrowded deepwater port, rail access, open land, and a tepid climate that permitted training and open port facilities year-round. The base became the southern home for the Seabees and was ideal for shipping construction materiel and men to the Caribbean or the Pacific via the Panama Canal. Since the base reopened in March 1966, Seabees have deployed from Gulfport to serve during major conflicts as well as in peacetime. Seabees from Gulfport played an integral part in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and more recently deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq to assist in local construction efforts to rebuild both countries. Seabees assist thousands each year in international humanitarian projects while still calling Gulfport home.

The Seabees at Port Hueneme
$18.73
In 1942, the navy sought a location for an advance base on the West Coast to ship construction materiel, equipment, and men into World War IIas Pacific theater. Port Huenemeas deepwater harbor, rail system, and rural setting made it the ideal site from which to send 20 million measurement tons of war materiel and a quarter of a million men onto island specks that later became headlines: Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the Philippines. Seabees later deployed from Port Hueneme to serve in the Korean, Vietnam, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and Iraqi conflicts, as well as in peacetime, for more than 60 years. Charged with building air bases, ports, combat camps, hospitals, and other support facilities as part of military and humanitarian efforts around the world, the Seabees remain at home in Port Hueneme.

As usual, the residents of Deepwater Cove will pop in and out of the story to delight readers. Hopewell and City Point
$21.37
In different times in its past, some have called Hopewell "the wonder city" or "the city that would not die." Others have called it "the wizard city," or "the city that DuPont built." "Hopewell," as someone once put it, "was either in the stew of most early American history or very near the fire." Images of America: Hopewell and City Point depicts the people, places, and products of a city that is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in America. Its natural deepwater harbor and its junction at the Appomattox and James Rivers attracted Native American settlements, colonial farmers, the plantation system of the South, the depot and command post for the Union siege of Petersburg, and a major manufacturing site prior to and during World War II.

The Port of Long Beach
$21.47
Rising from a tidal mudflat at the mouth of the Los Angeles River, the Port of Long Beach has grown through the 20th century into the one of the busiest deepwater ports. The ultramodern Port of Long Beach, the second-largest active harbor in the United States in the first decade of the 21st century, progressed steadily through a difficult adolescence fueled by the ambitions of a visionary few local community leaders who overcame political opposition to create a port separate and distinct from its neighboring Port of Los Angeles. Fueled by oil, Southern Californiaas unprecedented postaWorld War II growth, and the container revolution, the Port of Long Beach surmounted numerous natural and man-made hurdles to position itself, in its own right, as a critical link in the nationas global supply chain.

Old Tacoma
$18.83
In 1865, Job Carr paddled a canoe to his new homestead on a small harbor that would become Old Tacoma. The area’s notorious reputation — as "The Wildest Port North of San Francisco’s Barbary Coast" — haunted it for decades after the tall-masted schooners, sailors, brothels, and saloons were gone. Situated on the deepwater shoreline of Commencement Bay to ship timber from the vast tracts surrounding it, "Old Tacoma" was bypassed by the Northern Pacific terminus in favor of "New Tacoma" a few miles away. Settled by waves of Scandinavian and Croatian immigrants to work the mills and purse seiners, Old Tacoma became an isolated community. Though industry, shipbuilding, and timber mills gave way to commerce and recreation, the community of Old Tacoma still retains the unique flavor of its colorful past.

Live Yankees: The Sewalls and Their Ships
$25.97
For nearly a century members of the Sewall family built and managed a fleet of more than one hundred merchant vessels, mostly stout deepwater square-riggers. No family has been more intimately associated with the history of the city of Bath, then among the most productive shipbuilding communities of any size in the world. Despite a veneer of old-fashioned formalized civility, international shipping in the late 1800s and early 1900s was a highly competitive, low-margin, and often cut-throat business. While the Sewalls’ shrewd responses to market changes make a fascinating story, the surviving correspondence from their captains offers adventure of another kind. Sewall captains were required to make regular reports to the Sewall office, and this correspondence is a treasure-trove of stories about the voyages of Sewall ships

Jamaica Bay
$18.15
For more than two centuries after the Dutch settled its meandering shores, Jamaica Bay was little more than a watery expanse broken by small islands and a handful of mills. Rapid growth after the Civil War transformed the bay into a microcosm of a developing nation, as meadows gave way to houses and factories, and giant steamers and locomotives appeared. Plans to create the world’s largest deepwater port here were never realized, yet Jamaica Bay did emerge as a hub for aviation; the first successful transatlantic flight departed over the bayfollowed by millions of flights that have taken off from John F. Kennedy International Airport ever since. Through historic photographs, Jamaica Bay illustrates the bay’s transformation into a shellfishing haven, a recreational playground with hotels and casinos, and now the focus of a longterm environmental rehabilitation.

Blowout in the Gulf (Paperback)
$18.02
On April 20, 2010, the gigantic drilling rig Deepwater Horizon blew up in the Gulf of Mexico, killing eleven crew members and causing a massive eruption of oil from BP`s Macondo well. For months, oil gushed into the Gulf, spreading death and destruction. Americans watched real-time video of the huge column of oil and gas spewing from the obviously failed "blowout preventer." What was missing, though, was the larger story of this disaster. In Blowout in the Gulf, energy experts William Freudenburg and Robert Gramling explain both the disaster and the decisions that led up to it. Blowout in the Gulf weaves a fascinating narrative of failures, missteps, and bad decisions, explaining why this oil spill was a disaster waiting to happen–and how making better energy choices will help prevent others like it.

Coupeville (Paperback)
$33.95
The second-oldest town in Washington is Coupeville, founded in 1853. Until the white settlement of the 1850s, the Lower Skagit Indians lived in four villages on Penn Cove, fishing and gathering plentiful plants and berries. Sea captains, such as Capt. Thomas Coupe, were drawn to the area`s deepwater port and the opportunities it offered to transport timber from surrounding forests. At the same time, pioneer farmers, like Isaac Ebey, marveled at the rich soil of nearby Ebey`s Prairie, where they planted crops and wrote to friends and relatives, inviting them to come and share the bounty. Together, captains of the sea and soil created a town of distinctive Victorian houses and enterprising businesses that inhabitants and visitors enjoy today.

Cordova (Paperback)
$40
Cordova is built upon a rich foundation of bounties from both the sea and the land; add to that the traditions of many cultures of people and the result is a novel Alaskan community. Natives lived near the shores of the lake, and coastal areas of Prince William Sound guaranteed a food source with the return of the salmon each spring. Salmon also attracted others; by 1887, two canneries were operating in the Odiak Slough area. By 1915, Cordova became known as the "Razor Clam Capital of the World." High in the Wrangell Mountains lays the rich Kennecott copper lode; Cordova`s deepwater port was selected as the most accessible terminus for copper ore shipment. A 196-mile railroad delivered the first train loaded with copper ore to Cordova in 1911, beginning an era of prosperity and growth. Cordova has since survived the loss of the railroad, devastating fires, nature`s earthquakes, and man-made oil spills.

A Hole at the Bottom of the Sea (Paperback)
$22.39
It was a technological crisis in an alien realm: a blown-out oil well in mile-deep water in the Gulf of Mexico. For the engineers who had to kill the well, this was like Apollo 13, a crisis no one saw coming, and one of untold danger and challenge. A suspense story, a mystery, a technological thriller: This is Joel Achenbach’s groundbreaking account of the Deepwater Horizon disaster and what came after. The tragic explosion on the huge drilling rig in April 2010 killed eleven men and triggered an environmental disaster. As a gusher of crude surged into the Gulf’s waters, BP engineers and government scientists—awkwardly teamed in Houston—raced to devise ways to plug the Macondo well. Achenbach, a veteran reporter for The Washington Post and acclaimed science writer for National Geographic, moves beyond the blame game to tell the gripping story of what it was like, behind the scenes, moment by moment, in the struggle to kill Macondo. Here are the controversies, the miscalculations, the frustrations, and ultimately the technical triumphs of men and women who worked out of sight and around the clock for months to find a way to plug the well. The Deepwater Horizon disaster was an environmental 9/11. The government did not have the means to solve the problem; only the private sector had the tools, and it didn’t have the right ones as the country became haunted by Macondo’s black plume, which was omnipresent on TV and the Internet. Remotely operated vehicles, the spaceships of the deep, had to perform the challenging technical ma-neuvers on the seafloor. Engineers choreographed this robotic ballet and crammed years of innovation into a single summer. As he describes the drama in Houston, Achenbach probes the government investigation into what went wrong in the deep sea. This was a confounding mystery, an engineering whodunit. The lessons of this tragedy can be applied broadly to all complex enterprises and should m

In Too Deep: BP and the Drilling Race That Took It Down
$20.43
The truth behind the greatest environmental disaster in U.S. history In 2005, fifteen workers were killed when BP’s Texas City Refinery exploded. In 2006, corroded pipes owned by BP led to an oil spill in Alaska. Now, in 2010, eleven BP workers were killed in the Gulf of Mexico’s Macondo blowout. What’s next? In "In Too Deep: BP and the Drilling Race that Took It Down," Stanley Reed–a journalist who has covered BP for over a decade–and investigative reporter Alison Fitzgerald answer not only the question of what’s next but also examine why these disasters always happen to BP and not to the other large oil companies. The book: Shows that practices put in place by former BP CEO John Browne who was forced to resign after salacious details of his private life emerged in 2007 may have more to do with the disaster than anything Details a BP built on risk-taking and cost-cutting Examines the past, present, and future of BP In August 2010, BP successfully "killed" the company’s damaged deepwater well. But, the environmental fallout and public relations campaign to rebuild the brand are just beginning. "In Too Deep" details why BP suffered this disaster, why now, and what’s next for the oil giant.

Ships and Aircraft of the U.S. Fleet
$80.47
Packed with authoritative information, up-to-date photographs, line drawings, maps, and useful appendixes, this timely new guide describes the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard during an intensive period of transformation from the Cold War to what some call World War III. In the war against radical Muslim fundamentalists, the sea services play significant roles, and this comprehensive volume gives a valuable overview of each force and provides details of their ships, aircraft, weapons, and people. New to this eighteenth edition are chapters on the Navy’s littoral combat ships and the unmanned aerial vehicles being flown by all three services. Continuing a longstanding tradition as the most complete resource of its kind, this updated edition easily meets the high expectations and exacting standards of those who rely on it to stay informed and make important decisions. For example, new details are provided on the changing carrier air wings, the close-in weapon systems being provided for defense against small craft, a new submarine rescue system, the deepwater cutter program, unmanned undersea and unmanned surface vehicles, and the new SH-60R/S multipurpose, ship-based helicopters. In cataloging and updating the assets of U.S. Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard and in assessing various trends, the author once again reinforces the guide’s reputation for accuracy and reliability.

Terra Incognita: Photographs of America’s Third Coast
$36.45
Until the calamity of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and recent catastrophic hurricanes, the American Gulf Coast-a dynamic region of marshes, swamps, bayous, beaches, and hardwood forests-largely evaded national consciousness. In "Terra Incognita," photographer Richard Sexton explores this oft-overlooked but now extremely endangered landscape in a sequence of dramatic duotone photographs. Covering the Gulf Coast from the Mississippi River to the Florida panhandle, Sexton’s images of woods and wetlands resonate with spare simplicity and quiet beauty. Panoramas of gnarled trees, vistas of sea and sky, and shorelines dissolving into a misty fog depict the haunting terrain of the gulf coastal plain. This book and these photographs represent a natural miracle now under fearsome assault. Contrasting natural phenomena with found objects, and organic environments with constructed ones, Sexton’s imagery plays upon subtle patterns of mutation and transfiguration. No less striking are alterations brought about by the devastation of natural forces, now hastened and possibly even eclipsed by manmade. With their focus on the passage of time, and the cycle of loss and renewal, these photographs remind us that this ancient terrain is fragile, under constant pressure and contending with both human intervention and the vagaries of nature.

Cotuit and Santuit
$21.38
Cotuit, a name derived from a Native American word meaning "place of the council," has a rich history that predates Colonial times and includes continuous Native American habitation. Paired with Santuit on the south shore of Cape Cod and warmed by the Gulf Stream, Cotuit has long been a favorite summer resort and was home to Cape Cod’s first hotel. Its greatest attraction has always been the sweet Cotuit oysters, which are shipped to the best shellfish bars in the country. This quiet and unspoiled New England village, once a refuge for pirates, deepwater sailors, and coastal traders, hold secrets that are told only in Cotuit and Santuit. They are home to such people as Henry Adams, whose courtship took place here; the Cape Cod Commandos; a pioneer whistle-blower fighting against environmental pollution; and the witch Hannah Screecham, who guarded Captain Kidd’s treasure. Cotuit and Santuit reveals the adventures of the Holy Ghost Festival, the baby brought home from the Pacific whaling grounds in a cask of rum, and the trek over the Arctic Ocean across thirty miles of ice.

Deep Descent: Adventure and Death Diving the Andrea Doria
$22.07
On a foggy July evening in 1956, the Italian cruise liner Andrea Doria, bound for New York, was struck broadside by another vessel. In eleven hours, she would sink nearly 250 feet to the murky Atlantic Ocean floor. Thanks to a daring rescue operation, only 51 of more than 1,700 people died in the tragedy. But the Andrea Doria is still taking lives. Considered the Mt. Everest of diving, the Andrea Doria is the ultimate deepwater wreck challenge. Over the years, a small but fanatical group of extreme scuba divers have investigated the Andrea Doria, pushing themselves to the very limits of human endurance to explore her — and not all have returned. Diver Kevin McMurray takes you inside this elite club with a hard, honest look at those who go deeper, farther, and closer to the edge than others would ever dream. Deep Descent is the riveting true story of the human spirit overcoming human frailty and of fearsome, mortal risks traded for a hard-core adrenaline rush. Chronicling these adventures in his page-turning narrative and in dozens of dramatic photos, McMurray draws us deeper into the cold heart of the unforgiving sea, giving us a powerful vision of a place to which few will ever have the skills — or the courage — to go.

Drilling Down: The Gulf Oil Debacle and Our Energy Dilemma
$17.25
For more than a century, oil has been the engine of growth for a society that delivers an unprecedented standard of living to many. We now take for granted that economic growth is good, necessary, and even inevitable, but also feel a sense of unease about the simultaneous growth of complexity in the processes and institutions that generate and manage that growth. As societies grow more complex through the bounty of cheap energy, they also confront problems that seem to increase in number and severity. In this era of fossil fuels, cheap energy and increasing complexity have been in a mutually-reinforcing spiral. The more energy we have and the more problems our societies confront, the more we grow complex and require still more energy. How did our demand for energy, our technological prowess, the resulting need for complex problem solving, and the end of easy oil conspire to make the Deepwater Horizon oil spill increasingly likely, if not inevitable? This book explains the real causal factors leading up to the worst environmental catastrophe in U.S. history, a disaster from which it will take decades to recover.

Oil & Water
$16.63
When ten Oregonians travel to the Gulf Coast in August 2010 to plumb the devastation wrought by the Deepwater Horizon spill, they discover that Oil and Water is just the first of the insoluble contradictions. Between the tarred sands of Grand Isle and the fouled waters of the Louisiana bayou, they come to find out that Gulf Coast residents are economically dependent upon the very industry that is wreaking havoc on their environment. In the shadow of the greatest ecological disaster of our time, they are forced to reassess their roles as witness, critic and environmental steward. In this 120-page graphic novel written by Steve Duin, a columnist for The Oregonian, and illustrated by New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler readers will tour the shark-pocked beach at Grand Isle with the local head of Homeland Security; step aboard the crabbing boat of a 20-year-old Mississippian who works 16-hour days and spends his nights dreaming of M.I.T.; enter the Hot Zone where volunteers work desperately to save brown pelicans drenched in British petroleum; and hear shrimpers, Vietnamese and good ol boys alike, describe what happens to their livelihood when 200 million gallons of oil flood the scene. The readers perspective on what hope and what mission remains along a ravaged coastline, and one awash in both seafood and oil, will be changed as irrevocably as that of these ten Oregonians.

Exploration of Gas Hydrates: Geophysical Techniques
$181.29
Gas hydrates are ice-like crystalline substances that form a rigid cage of water molecules and entrap hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon gas by hydrogen bonding. Natural gas hydrate is primarily composed of water and methane. These are solid, crystalline, ice-like substances found in permafrost areas and deepwater basins around the world. They naturally occur in the pore space of marine sediments, where appropriate high pressure and low temperature conditions exist in an adequate supply of gas (mainly methane). Gas hydrates are considered as a potential non conventional energy resource. Methane hydrates are also recognized as, an influence on offshore platform stability, a major factor in climate change contributing to global warming and a significant contribution to the ocean carbon cycle. The proposed book treats various geophysical techniques in order to quantify the gas hydrate reserves and their impact on environment. The primary goal of this book is to provide the state of art for gas hydrate exploration. The target audiences for this book are non-specialist from different branches of science, graduate students and researchers.

The Race for What`s Left (Hardcover)
$33.82
From Michael Klare, the renowned expert on natural resource issues, an invaluable account of a new and dangerous global competitionThe world is facing an unprecedented crisis of resource depletion a crisis that goes beyond "peak oil" to encompass shortages of coal and natural gas, copper and cobalt, water and arable land. With all of the Earth`s habitable areas already in use, the desperate hunt for supplies has now reached the final frontiers. The Race for What`s Left takes us from the Arctic to war zones to deep ocean floors, from a Russian submarine planting the country`s flag under the North Pole to the large-scale buying up of African farmland by Saudi Arabia and other nations. As Michael T. Klare explains, this frenzy of extreme exploration and acquisition carries grave consequences. With resource extraction growing more complex, the environmental risks are becoming increasingly severe: the Deepwater Horizon disaster is only a preview of the dangers to come. At the same time, the intense search for dwindling supplies is igniting new border disputes, raising the likelihood of military confrontation. The only way out, Klare argues, will be to alter our consumption patterns altogether a crucial task that will be the greatest challenge of the coming century.

The Queen of Whale Cay (Paperback)
$22.85
`Joe` Carstairs was born in London in 1900, the daughter of a Scottish colonel and an American heiress. Educated in Connecticut, she returned to Europe in 1916 and drove ambulances for the Women`s Legion in France. She deserted her husband at the church door (marriage was a prerequisite for her to receive her four million dollar inheritance) and settled in England where she took up racing, established a boat yard at Cowes, and won nearly every trophy going. In the `30s she started traveling widely, finally moving to the West Indies where she bought the island of Whale Cay. There she developed the island into a populated community, building everything from roads and schools to lighthouses and churches. Carstairs then succeeded in establishing hegemony over the five hundred islanders, controlling not only their sexual morals but also their diet. In 1944 she built a deepwater harbor for the Royal Navy`s use and, without a word to her population, left the island to build warcraft in Florida, where she settled for forty years, having run a steamship freightline and set up a chain of airports. Kate Summerscale`s brilliant biography brings out of obscurity a woman whose very boldness took her beyond fame and notoriety.

Poisoned Legacy
$6.99
The story is all too-familiar: On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded, killing eleven workers and creating the largest oil spill in the history of U.S. offshore drilling. But, this wasn’t the first time British Petroleum and its cost-cutting practices destroyed parts of the natural world.  It also was not the first time that BP’s negligence resulted in the loss of human life, ruined family businesses or shattered dreams.  Journalist Mike Magner has been tracking BP’s reckless path for years and, for the first time, focuses on the human price of BP’s rise to power. From Alaska to Kansas to the Gulf, Magner has talked to people whose lives have been destroyed by BP’s almost unparalleled corporate greed.  When BP acquired an abandoned Kansas refinery in 1998, it discovered one of the most contaminated groundwater plumes in the U.S. Rather than begin a full cleanup, BP declared there was no cause for concern. A former schoolteacher alarmed by cancer cases in the town pushed her community to take BP to court. In 2005, an explosion at BP’s Texas City refinery, operating with a raft of safety problems because of neglected maintenance, killed fifteen people including the mother and father of a young woman who was driving there to spend the Easter holidays with her parents.  A year later, thousands of gallons of oil spilled onto Alaska’s North Slope from a corroded BP pipeline. Following a hurricane, BP’s Thunder Horse rig almost sank because of a flaw in its construction, and repair work exposed even more serious problems.  Poisoned Legacy is the searing true story of the rise and fall of BP, a company that went from being a green maverick promising a world “Beyond Petroleum” to one of the most notorious corporate villains in history.

Black Tide: The Devastating Impact of the Gulf Oil Spill
$21.5
A searing look at the human face of BP’s disaster in the Gulf The largest oil spill in American history is more than a story of ruined beaches, dead wildlife, corporate spin, political machinations, and financial fallout. It is a compelling human drama with people whose lives will forever be defined as "before" and "after the BP Gulf oil spill." Black Tide is the only book to tell this story through the perspective of people on all sides of the disaster, from those who lost their lives, loved ones, and livelihoods to those who made the policies that set the devastating event in motion, those who cut the corners that put corporate profits over people and the environment, and those whose have committed their lives to ensuring such an event never happens again. Draws on the author’s personal interviews from the Gulf and Washington, D.C. with dozens of people on the front lines of the disaster, from the living room of Sherri Revette, whose husband, Dewey, died on the Deepwater Horizon, to the deck of the Oceana where scientist Samantha Joye chases oil plumes, to the oil soaked beaches of Dauphin Island where environmentalist Casi Callaway fights for protection, to the halls of Congress, where Congressman Ed Markey struggles to hold BP to account Takes an up-close look at the key players such as BP’s former CEO and PR nightmare Tony Hayward, oil industry lead lobbyist Jack Gerard, Governor Bobby Jindal, Admiral Thad Allen, and President Barack Obama Written by a leading oil industry expert who has already done a great deal of media to discuss the spill Dramatic and compelling, "Black Tide" exposes the human failings and the human cost of a manmade disaster that will be with us for a very long time.

Shadows on the Gulf: A Journey Through Our Last Great Wetland
$22.36
While other books play the blame game of what went wrong on the Deepwater Horizon and who is responsible, "Shadows on the Gulf" offers a surprising, harder truth: As bad as the oil spill was, it doesn’t touch the damage done to the Gulf every year by what one expert in the book calls "A 100-year catastrophe." Readers who believe they know the story will find their thinking changed by "Shadows’" surprising perspective: At the height of BP’s dispersant madness, the amount sprayed each day merely equaled the amount of dispersant that washes down the Mississippi from the Heartland’s dishwashers and washing machines. The Gulf’s shrimpers have damaged the region’s ecology as much BP has. The acres of marsh destroyed by oil slicks can’t compare to the amount that disappears in every hurricane, thanks to the work of the Army Corp of Engineers. And even if we save every mile of beach and wetland from the oil spill, the entire Mississippi Delta will still be lost in the next forty years and New Orleans will sink beneath the waves, the American Atlantis. "Shadows on the Gulf" reveals the key players in this catastrophe and explains why it will affect quality of life for us all. In doing so, it celebrates the little-recognized global wonder in our backyard. Not only are the Gulf’s wetlands the best oyster reefs and fish nurseries in the world, they also provide critical habitat to most of America’s migratory songbirds and waterfowl, as well as a home base for the energy and shipping industries. If the Gulf is allowed to fail, the effects will ripple across America. And fail it will, unless a national effort is made to save it.

The Highest Tide
$3.95
A mesmerizing, allegorical, and beautifully wrought first novel about one boy’s fascination with the sea during the summer that will change his life. One moonlit night, thirteen-year-old Miles O’Malley slips out of his house, packs up his kayak and goes exploring on the flats of Puget Sound. But what begins as an ordinary hunt for starfish, snails, and clams is soon transformed by an astonishing sight: a beached giant squid. As the first person to ever see a giant squid alive, the speed-reading Rachel Carson-obsessed insomniac instantly becomes a local curiosity. When he later finds a rare deepwater fish in the tidal waters by his home, and saves a dog from drowning, he is hailed as a prophet. The media hovers and everyone wants to hear what Miles has to say. But Miles is really just a teenager on the verge of growing up, infatuated with the girl next door, worried that his bickering parents will divorce, and fearful that everything, even the bay he loves, is shifting away from him. While the sea continues to offer up discoveries from its mysterious depths, Miles struggles to deal with the difficulties that attend the equally mysterious process of growing up. In this mesmerizing, beautifully wrought first novel, we witness the dramatic sea change for both Miles and the coastline that he adores over the course of a summer–one that will culminate with the highest tide in fifty years.

Settlements on the Columbia River: Portland, Oregon
$35.77
Chapters: Portland, Oregon. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 212. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Portland, Oregon – Portland in 1890 Portland started as a spot known as "the clearing," which was on the banks of the Willamette about halfway between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver. In 1843, William Overton saw great commercial potential for this land but lacked the funds required to file a land claim. He struck a bargain with his partner Asa Lovejoy of Boston, Massachusetts: for 25cents, Overton would share his claim to the 640 acre (2.6 km ) site. Overton later sold his half of the claim to Francis W. Pettygrove of Portland, Maine. Pettygrove and Lovejoy each wished to name the new city after his respective home town; this was decided with a coin toss, which Pettygrove won in a series of two out of three tosses. The coin used for this decision, now known as the Portland Penny, is on display in the headquarters of the Oregon Historical Society. At the time of its incorporation on February 8, 1851 Portland had over 800 inhabitants, a steam sawmill, a log cabin hotel, and a newspaper, the Weekly Oregonian. By 1879, the population had grown to 17,500. The city merged with Albina and East Portland in 1891 and with Linnton and St. Johns in 1915. Portland’s location, with access both to the Pacific Ocean via the Willamette and the Columbia rivers and to the agricultural Tualatin Valley via the "Great Plank Road" through a canyon in the West Hills (the route of current-day U.S. Route 26), gave it an advantage over nearby ports, and it grew quickly. It remained the major port in the Pacific Northwest for much of the 19th century, until the 1890s, when Seattle’s deepwater harbor was connected to the rest of the mainland by rail, affording an inland route without the treacherous navigation of the…More: http: //booksllc.net/?id=2

Petroleum Engineer’s Guide to Oil Field Chemicals and Fluids
$115.98
Oilfield chemical demand has risen 4.3 percent annually through 2011. Gains will be driven by a rise in rig counts, more use of well stimulation and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods and more deepwater drilling and production. Working Guide to Oil Field Chemicals is a guide to the benefits and trade-offs of numerous oil field chemicals used in the petroleum and natural gas industry today. Oil field chemicals are gaining increasing importance, as the resources of crude oil are decreasing. An increasing demand of more sophisticated methods in the exploitation of the natural resources emerges for this reason. Working Guide to Oil Field Chemicals reviews the progress in the area of oil field chemicals and additives of the last decade from a rather chemical view. The material presented is a compilation from the literature by screening critically approximately 20,000 references. The book is ordered according to applications, just in the way how the jobs are emerging in practice. It starts with drilling, goes to productions and ends with oil spill. Several chemicals are used in multiple disciplines, and to those separate chapters are devoted. Two index registers are available, an index of chemical substances and a general index. Condensed for readability this manual provides users with information on oil field chemicals such as drilling muds, Corrosion Inhibitors Gelling Agents, Scale Inhibitors and Bacteria Control. Each chapter follows the same template. In the introductory comments of each chapter a brief introduction to the chemical or polymer type is given and earlier monographs and reviews dealing with the topic are listed for quick reference. The text continues with monomers, polymerization and fabrication techniques and discusses aspects of application. After this, suppliers and commercial grades are collected, as well as safety aspects. Chemicals are ordered by use including drilling muds, corrosion inhibitors, and bacteria control Includes cutting edge chemicals and polymers such as water soluble polymers and viscosity control Handy index of chemical substances as well as a general chemical index

Remaking Boston: An Environmental History of the City and Its Surroundings
$45.6
Since its settlement in 1630, Boston, its harbor, and outlying regions have witnessed a monumental transformation at the hands of humans and by nature. "Remaking Boston" chronicles many of the events that altered the physical landscape of Boston, while also offering multidisciplinary perspectives on the environmental history of one of America’s oldest and largest metropolitan areas. Situated on an isthmus, and blessed with a natural deepwater harbor and ocean access, Boston became an important early trade hub with Europe and the world. As its population and economy grew, developers extended the city’s shoreline into the surrounding tidal mudflats to create more useable land. Further expansion of the city was achieved through the annexation of surrounding communities, and the burgeoning population and economy spread to outlying areas. The interconnection of city and suburb opened the floodgates to increased commerce, services and workforces, while also leaving a wake of roads, rails, bridges, buildings, deforestation, and pollution. Profiling this ever-changing environment, the contributors tackle a variety of topics, including: the glacial formation of the region; physical characteristics and composition of the land and harbor; dredging, sea walling, flattening, and landfill operations in the reshaping of the Shawmut Peninsula; the longstanding controversy over the link between landfills and shoaling in shipping channels; population movements between the city and suburbs and their environmental implications; interdependence of the city and its suburbs; preservation and reclamation of the Charles River; suburban deforestation and later reforestation as byproducts of changing land use; the planned outlay of parks and parkways; and historic climate changes and the human and biological adaptations to them.
